Equine Pure Essentials feeding system explained
Stand back and think about it. Your average horse eats approximately 3 to 3.5 tonnes of forage (hay or grass dry matter) per year - the majority of this is fibre. Hard feed is needed to provide the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients not available in the forage, or as an extra source of energy for horses in hard work. So why feed a few more kilograms of fibre in your hard feed when he already eats tonnes of forage?
Stand back and think about it. Most supplements are fed as a small measure mixed in the feed each day. No matter how good the supplement is, it
cannot be as effective when your horse's main diet is poor (an apple a day doesn't keep the doctor away when your main diet is burgers, chips and cola). Check the quality of your horse's forage
and hard feed before giving supplements. See our information articles page for more details.

synergistic diet. Everything in the range is compatible and in harmony, for the optimum nutritional support of your horse's metabolism.

- high levels of active ingredients. When we include probiotics, prebiotics and herbs for example, we include them in generous amounts that really do work. Not just a pinch to say its been included!

Choosing a feed for your horse and deciding which supplements to use is a minefield - with so many different brands and such clever marketing tactics to promote products at inflated prices. Using feeds and supplements that have not been designed to be fed together greatly increases the chances of overfeeding certain elements or creating greater problems by causing an imbalance in the horse's metabolism. For example, calming feeds may contain high levels of magnesium as this is promoted for relaxing nervous animals. The owner does not get the desired result, so then adds a calming supplement, which as it turns out, is pure magnesium oxide. The result? A horse receiving far too much magnesium, which may cause diarrhoea and disrupt the sensitive mineral balance of the horse's cellular metabolism. Too much magnesium and not enough calcium can lead to osteoporosis for example.
Most horse owners have to rely on the wording on the front of the feed and supplement packaging. Without the detailed nutritional and biochemical knowledge required, trying to work out whether 'Feed A' will go with 'Supplement B' is all but impossible. The dangers of oversupplementation or counteractive ingredients are great and are one of the major problems facing horses today.
The Pure Essentials feeding system is the first complete feeding system to incorporate the highest grade of nutrition with a series of specialised Gut-Balancers, designed to work perfectly alongside the main feed.
